Yesterday winner of the lucky draw was Umami, that has been much talked restaurant in Copenhagen last years. Umami serves modern Japanese cuisine with a touch of French influence. The restaurant has received well deserved and highly appreciated reviews both by food critics and customers alike. It is located near Kongen Nytorv ( Store Kongensgade 59) and has a very fancy, modern coctail bar downstairs, from where it’s nice to start your dinner. The actual dining room is on the second floor and also has a modern classic interior. The staff is friendly and well up to the best standards of a good restaurant. Back to the main thing, FOOD that is. On the menu there is a surprise Omakasemenu with 6 different courses, but I chose a first course of foie gras with Japanese inari tofu and duck confit, which was a great surprise. Nice pieces of fresh foie gras pan-fried to perfection, with a Japanese twist worked beautifully. As a main course I took veal tenderloin, with wasabi truffle sauce, combined with eggplant, potatoes, toasted almonds and shitake mushrooms. The meat was cooked up to perfection and it’s mild taste was nicely balanced with the sauce. Maybe the weakest link here was the a bit heavy side dish, but rest of the dish made it up anyway. On the menu there are many interesting courses, tuna sashimi with yuzu soya, kingfish with ponzu, langoustine with gioza, pork breast with unagi and lobster foam and hijiki (whatever that is) as starters and Sea bass, Duck breast, Lamb sirloin as mains, all with Japanese flavours to mention a few.
Also the traditional Sashimi’s and Tempuras can be found on the menu, so will most likely have to visit the place again. The price range is descent taking in consideration the fame of the restaurant and the quality of the food, so I’ll be back…..
